History

Distillery No. 209 traces its origins to 1882 when vintner-distiller William
Scheffler added a stone and brick distillery to the winemaking facilities at Edge Hill Winery in St. Helena, California. A distiller at heart, Scheffler registered the distillery with the federal government and was given distillery license number 209 – the 209th distillery permitted by law in the U.S. Scheffler’s distilled spirits were very high quality, winning a medal at the Universal Exposition of 1889 in Paris, France.

In 1999, Leslie Rudd discovered the remnants of the distillery and faded letters “Registered Distillery No. 209” above the entry of an old hay barn at Edge Hill Winery, which the Rudd Family now owns. He decided to revive the operation, currently located at Pier 50 in San Francisco adjacent to AT&T Park. Distillery No. 209 is the world’s only distillery built over water.

Description

Distillery No. 209 is owned by the Rudd Family of Dean & Deluca and Rudd Oakville Estate, who discovered the remnants of the original distillery on their Edge Hill property and decided to revive the operation.

Hand-fashioned and distilled five times at the beautiful Pier 50 facility in San Francisco – the world’s only distillery built over water – No. 209 Gin is a smooth, modern gin made from the finest, all natural botanicals sourced from around the world.

Distillery No. 209 marries the best of traditional Old World distilling techniques and time-honored ingredients with a passion for excellence and innovative thinking to create an artisanal gin with a modern flavor profile.

Tasting notes

Unlike the traditional, juniper-heavy gins of the past, No. 209 Gin is an artisanal, modern-styled gin with a distinctive aromatic nose of predominantly floral and citrus notes and just a whisper of juniper.

Created using all natural botanicals sourced from the finest-quality producers across four continents, the delicious complexity of No. 209’s citrus spice flavor profile is primarily a result of bergamot orange, lemon peel, cardamom pods, cassia bark, angelica root and coriander seeds.
