Since it was first created to an original family recipe in 1761, little has changed about the smooth rich rounded flavour of Greenall’s Original London Dry Gin.

The distillery was established in 1761 by Thomas Dakin making it the oldest gin distillery in the UK. Dakin sold the distillery to the Greenall family in 1860.

The gin quickly became known for its quality and was the toast of the fashionable London crowd with daily shipments sent down to the capital.

This dedication to quality has ensured the enduring success of the distillery. Continuity and traditional distillation methods have always been at the core of gin making. The craft and expertise of the Greenall family have been passed down through generations. Testament to this is the fact that production is overseen by only the seventh Master Distiller in 250 years.

Greenall’s Original London Dry Gin is distilled according to the traditional gin making methods going back over 250 years.

Before the distillation starts, the botanicals are added by hand to the copper still. This containts a mix of still grain neutral spirit and water sourced from the foothills of the local Cheshire Plains. The botanicals are then allowed to rest and infuse with the spirit.

Using steam, the liquid is heated until it vaporises, taking in all the essential oils and aromas of the botanicals. The vapour is collected, cooled and condensed to produce a concentrated spirit

Only the hearts of the distillate is chosen to create the gin. Any residual liquids called ‘the heads and tails’ (created at the beginning and end of the process) are discarded. The Master Distiller then adjusts this spirit to ensure that it delivers the perfect strength, taste and quality for Greenall’s Original London Dry Gin.

Tasting notes

Greenall’s gin has been distilled in the England’s oldest distillery for over 250 years. The recipe remains a closely guarded secret, known only to the 7 master distillers who have crafted the gin for generations.
