History
  • The company founded by Piotr Smirnov Arsenyevitch was born in Moscow in 1818.
  • In 1886, Czar Alexander III appointed the Smirnov as "sole suppliers to the Imperial Court" for the high quality of its vodka.
  • Since 1870, Andrew AlbaNov discovered chemical absorption qualities of coal. The Smirnov company was pioneered in the use of coal to filter vodka and improved the quality of the product quality with continuous distillation.
  • After the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks confiscated all private industries of Moscow and the Smirnov distillery became into a repair shop. Vladimir, one of Smirnov's sons, settled in Paris, where he adopted the French version of his family name, Smirnoff. He teamed up with Rudolf Kunett and decided to tackle the U.S. market.
